Genetic Diseases of the Kidney

Genetic Diseases of the Kidney identifies and analyzes genetic abnormalities causing renal diseases in human subjects. Although in a sense the genome contains all the instructions required for the formation of a phenotype, the information is encoded in an extremely complicated fashion. In primary genetic diseases, the genetic instruction specifies a phenotype clearly linked with a discreet lesion confined to the kidney. However, the genetic disturbance may be imbedded in a complicated physiologic ensemble, so that the nexus between the genetic disturbance and the phenotype may be obscured; in consequence, the causal sequence is extremely difficult to unravel. In many instances the renal disease is one component of a complicated systemic hereditary disease, either monogenic or polygenic. Indeed, renal disease may arise as the sum of minor inputs from many different, seemingly unrelated genes, so that the genetic contributions may be difficult to identify. Confounding the problem further are environmental influences, originating either in the chromosomal environment from modifier genes, or in the extra-chromosomal environmental from intrauterine or postnatal influences. These considerations have determined both the organization of the text as well as the detailed description of the genetic disorders and the physiologic derangements that emerge.
* Lays the essential foundation of mammalian genetics principles for medical professionals with little to no background in genetics
* Analyzes specific renal diseases - both monogenic disorders confined to the kidney as well as systemic diseases with renal involvement - and explains their genetic causes.
*World-renowned editors and authors offer expert frameworks for understanding the links between genes and complex clinical disorders (i.e., lupus, diabetes, HIV, and hypertension)

GFI Network Security and PCI Compliance Power Tools

For system administrators and IT security professionals to properly secure their networks, it is imperative that they utilize tools which constantly scan their networks and report back suspicious activity and/or the presence of known security vulnerabilities. These tasks are also key components for companies who must achieve Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI) compliance. GFI Network Security is a market leader in this security scanning, reporting, and federal compliance space. Their products are deployed on over 200,000 networks worldwide and they have over 10,000 worldwide re-sellers. The GFI customer base is also extremely active and tightly-knit. Their forums have over 14,000 registered users and there are currently 18,200 topics under discussion. These are good indicators of both the size of the market and users' need to gain more information on GFI products. This book is the first reference for these system administrators and security professionals specifically covering GFI's products. The book is being developed with support of the GFI Engineering team.
GFI LANGuard Network Security Scanner (NSS) combines vulnerability scanning and patch management functions into one, powerful tool set. By analyzing the operating system and the applications running on a network, GFI LANguard NSS identifies potential security issues. It then alerts system administrators and security professionals to weaknesses before a hacker can find them. This allows the IT staff to close any holes before they are exploited. The GFI PCI Suite is a package comprising the core software required for companies to achieve Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI) compliance. This suite is a component of GFI LANGuard Network Security Scanner (NSS). The GFI PCI Suite also features enhanced reporting functionality with reports created specifically to help organizations become compliant.
GFI products have received introductory coverage in dozens of IT books for system administrators and security professionals. But, these tools have never received the in-depth, substantive coverage required to truly master them. While our book will have a certain amount of introductory material, it will be primarily written for intermediate to advanced users who must push these tools to the limits to do their jobs. Readers of this book have already scoured the user forums and smattering of coverage in other books. Now, they'll finally have the comprehensive reference they need.
* Use GFI EndPointSecurity to Lock Down Hardware
* Create Protection Policies to Control the Level of Device Access
* Master Advanced Features of GFI: Locking Device Categories, Blacklisting and Whitelisting Devices, Using File Type Restrictions and More..

Think UNIX (Que-Consumer-Other)

Unix has a reputation for being cryptic and difficult to learn, but it doesn't need to be that way. Think Unix takes an analogous approach to that of a grammar book. Rather than teaching individual words or phrases like most books, Think Unix teaches the set of logical structures to be learned. Myriad examples help you learn individual commands, and practice problems at the end of difficult sections help you learn the practical side of Unix. Strong attention is paid to learning how to read "man pages," the standard documentation on all Unix systems, including Linux. While most books simply tell you that man pages exist and spend some time teaching how to use the man command, none spend any significant amount of space teaching how to use the content of the man pages. Even if you are lost at the Unix command prompt, you can learn subsystems that are specific to the Unix flavor.

The Sociology of Financial Markets

Financial markets have often been seen by economists as efficient mechanisms that fulfill vital functions within economies. But do financial markets really operate in such a straightforward manner? The Sociology of Financial Markets approaches financial markets from a sociological perspective. It seeks to provide an adequate sociological coneptualization of financial markets, and examine who the actors within them are, how they operate, within which networks, and how these networks are structured. Patterns of trading, trading room coordination, and global interaction are studied to help us better understand how markets work and the types of reasoning behind these trends. Financial markets also have a structural impact on the governance of social and economic institutions. Until now, sociologists have examined issues of governance mostly with respect to the legal framework of financial transactions. Contributions in this book highlight the ways in which financial markets shape the inner working and structure of corporations and their governance. Finally the book seeks to investigate the symbolic aspects of financial markets. Financial markets affect not only economic and social structures but also societal cultural images and frameworks of meaning. Barbara Czarniawska demonstrates how representations of gender relationships are a case in point. Arguing that financial markets are not simply neutral with respect to questions of gender but enhance certain images and interpretations of men and women. Addressing many important topics from a sociological perspective for the first time, this book will be key reading for academics, researchers, and advanced students of financial markets in Business, Management, Economics, Finance, and Sociology.

Mathematics

"In Macmillan's four-volume Mathematics encyclopedia, users will learn about the function of mathematics in everyday life as well as its role as a tool for measurement, data analysis, and technological development. Interdisciplinary in scope, the encyclopedia provides students with a clear and comprehensive introduction to this vast topic through nearly 300 entries that were commissioned especially for the set. The goal of the encyclopedia is to make mathematics and its basic disciplines—such as algebra, geometry, and trigonometry—more accessible and interesting to students and general users.
Biographical entries highlight mathematicians who have made significant contributions to the field. More than 30 career-related articles offer examples of mathematics "on the job." Entries on applications explore the role of mathematics in the modern world, from everyday conveniences to global communication methods and a multitude of scientific and technological advances. The authors who contributed entries to Mathematics bring a variety of expertise to the subject, and include members of academic institutions, math educators, and curriculum specialists. Contributors used their subject knowledge to write entries that are authoritative and up to date, but free of overly technological terms and scientific jargon. Many entries are illustrated and numerous equations, table, figures, and sidebars help illuminate the text. Unfamiliar terms and concepts are highlighted and defined in the margin, while cross-references direct users to articles of related interest. Most entries feature a selected bibliography, including Internet resources. Each volume includes a topical outline, a glossary, andan index. A cumulative index to the entire set appears in volume 4."

The Computer Engineering Handbook

There is arguably no field in greater need of a comprehensive handbook than computer engineering. The unparalleled rate of technological advancement, the explosion of computer applications, and the now-in-progress migration to a wireless world have made it difficult for engineers to keep up with all the developments in specialties outside their own. References published only a few years ago are now sorely out of date. The Computer Engineering Handbook changes all of that. Under the leadership of Vojin Oklobdzija and a stellar editorial board, some of the industry's foremost experts have joined forces to create what promises to be the definitive resource for computer design and engineering. Instead of focusing on basic, introductory material, it forms a comprehensive, state-of-the-art review of the field's most recent achievements, outstanding issues, and future directions. The world of computer engineering is vast and evolving so rapidly that what is cutting-edge today may be obsolete in a few months. While exploring the new developments, trends, and future directions of the field, The Computer Engineering Handbook captures what is fundamental and of lasting value.

10 Secrets of Time Management for Salespeople

Dave Kahle adapts many now common time management processes for the specific use of salespeople in the field. His underlying assumption is that it is much more difficult for outside salespeople to apply the usual techniques, since their lives are so filled with uncertainty. Plus salespeople tend to be action-oriented, so they don't commonly want to spend time planning or setting up systems. But, Kahle argues, such organization is critical to success in sales. While Kahle claims that most time management principles and tactics "totally miss the unique challenges of the field salesperson," the material he covers in the book sounds very familiar. It echoes many other books about goal setting, problem solving, decision making and effective selling. getAbstract.com finds that while this may be a helpful review of fairly common material in the guise of time management, the information is hardly unique - although its focus on salespeople's needs may give it additional value for them.
