Instrumentation Design Studies

Ernest Doebelin, "Instrumentation Design Studies"
CRC | 2010 | ISBN: 1439819483 | 725 pages | PDF | 24,5 MB

Integrating physical modeling, mathematical analysis, and computer simulation, Instrumentation Design Studies explores a wide variety of specific and practical instrumentation design situations. The author uses MATLAB® and SIMULINK® for dynamic system simulation, Minitab® for statistical applications, and Mathcad for general engineering computations. Rather than consult the extensive manuals of these software packages, readers can access handy, sharply focused material in the appendices to assist in comprehension.

After introducing the techniques behind the design of experiments (DOE), the book discusses several technologies for implementing vibration isolation, the design of a high-accuracy pressure transducer, and the use of cold-wire thermometers for measuring rapidly fluctuating fluid temperatures. It then focuses on a basic piezoelectric actuator that provides translational motions up to about 1mm full scale with nanometer resolution, before covering instruments used to measure the viscosity of liquids as well as two special classes of microphones (infrasonic and ultrasonic) and their important specialized applications. The book also presents statistical tools, such as hypothesis testing and confidence intervals, for experiments; the design and applications of thrust stands for measuring vector forces and torques; and the analysis and simulation of a shock calibrator. It concludes with a discussion of how shock testing machines can help reduce or prevent mechanical failures.

Spanning system dynamics, measurement, and control, this book addresses the needs of practicing engineers working in instrumentation fields. It focuses on instruments for various applications, from geophysics to mechanical and aerospace engineering.

Mathematics in India

Kim Plofker, "Mathematics in India"
Princeton University Press | 2008 | ISBN: 0691120676, 1400834074 | 384 pages | PDF | 2,4 MB

Based on extensive research in Sanskrit sources, Mathematics in India chronicles the development of mathematical techniques and texts in South Asia from antiquity to the early modern period. Kim Plofker reexamines the few facts about Indian mathematics that have become common knowledge--such as the Indian origin of Arabic numerals--and she sets them in a larger textual and cultural framework. The book details aspects of the subject that have been largely passed over in the past, including the relationships between Indian mathematics and astronomy, and their cross-fertilizations with Islamic scientific traditions. Plofker shows that Indian mathematics appears not as a disconnected set of discoveries, but as a lively, diverse, yet strongly unified discipline, intimately linked to other Indian forms of learning.

Far more than in other areas of the history of mathematics, the literature on Indian mathematics reveals huge discrepancies between what researchers generally agree on and what general readers pick up from popular ideas. This book explains with candor the chief controversies causing these discrepancies--both the flaws in many popular claims, and the uncertainties underlying many scholarly conclusions. Supplementing the main narrative are biographical resources for dozens of Indian mathematicians; a guide to key features of Sanskrit for the non-Indologist; and illustrations of manuscripts, inscriptions, and artifacts. Mathematics in India provides a rich and complex understanding of the Indian mathematical tradition.

Women in India: A Social and Cultural History, Volume 2

Sita Raman, "Women in India: A Social and Cultural History, Volume 2"
Publisher: Praeger | 2009 | ISBN 031337712X | PDF | 264 pages | 1.5 MB

Are Indian women powerful mother goddesses, or domestic handmaidens trailing behind men in literacy, wages, opportunities, and rights? Have they been agents of their own destinies, or voiceless victims of patriarchy? Behind these colorful over-simplifications lies the reality of many feminine personas belonging to various classes, ethnicities, religions, and castes. This two-volume set looks at Indian history from ancient to modern times, revealing precisely why ideas of gender rights were not static across eras or regions. Raman's work is a reflection on the various ways in which women in a non-Western culture have developed and expressed their own feminist agenda.
Individual chapters highlight the enduring legacies of many important male and female figures, illustrating how each played a key role in modifying the substance of women's lives. Political movements are examined as well, such as the nationalist reform movement of 1947 in which the ideal of Indian womanhood became central to the nation and the push for independence. Also included is a survey of women in contemporary India and the role they played in the resurgence of militant Hindu nationalism. Aside from being an engaging and readable narrative of Indian history, this set integrates women's issues, roles, and achievements into the general study of the times, providing a clear presentation of the social, cultural, religious, political, and economic realities that have helped shape the identity of Indian women.

A. S. Yazbeck, A. Wagstaff, G. N. V. Ramana, L. H. Pritchett, R. R. Sharma - Better Health Systems for India's Poor

Abdo S. Yazbeck, Adam Wagstaff, G. N. V. Ramana, Lant H. Pritchett, Rashmi R. Sharma, David H. Peters - Better Health Systems for India's Poor: Findings, Analysis, and Options
Publisher: World Bank Publications | 2002-05 | ISBN: 0821350293 | PDF | 376 pages | 2.84 MB

This report focuses on four areas of the health system in which reforms, and innovations would make the most difference to the future of the Indian health system: oversight, public health service delivery, ambulatory curative care, and inpatient care (together with health insurance). Part 1 of the report contains four chapters that discuss current conditions, and policy options. Part 2 presents the theory, and evidence to support the policy choices. The general reader may be most interested in the overview chapter, and in the highlights found at the beginning of each of the chapters in part 2. These highlights outline the empirical findings, and the main policy challenges discussed in the chapter. The report does not set out to prescribe detailed answers for India ' s future health system. It does however, have a goal: to support informed debate, and consensus building, and to help shape a health system that continually strives to be more effective, equitable, efficient, and accountable to the Indian people, and particularly to the poor.

India: In Word and Image

Eric Meola, Bharati Mukherjee
India: In Word and Image

Welcome Books | 2008 | ISBN: 1599620499 | 272 pages | PDF | 102 Mb

Although photographer Meola's claim that he is drawn to India because the people are blessed with childhood's sense of wonder seems slightly patronizing, his photographs are an affectionate tribute to the subcontinent's diversity and history. Meola has a fine eye for detail and devotes equal attention to the grand and the humble, from spectacular Buddhist mandalas and Rajasthan's sprawling forts to rose-ringed parakeets nesting in trees or henna on a woman's hands. Suffused with light and color, his images sidestep cliché to achieve an intimacy and spontaneity that readers will relish. Excerpts from such writers as Arundhati Roy, Salman Rushdie and V.S. Naipaul round out this breathtaking book.

Ophthalmology: A Pocket Textbook Atlas

"Ophthalmology: A Pocket Textbook Atlas" by Gerhard Lang
Thieme | 635 pages | English | 2007 | ISBN: 1588905551 | PDF | 26,7 MB

The authors' constant interactions with medical students in the classroom, on the hospital ward, and in oral examinations ever since this pocket atlas first appeared in English 2001 have enabled them to update both the text and the illustrations for this new English edition. Like its predecessor, the 2nd edition provides a concise, thorough and up-to-date introduction to the field of ophthalmology.

Medical students on ophthalmology rotations, as well as beginning residents, will find it an invaluable companion on the ward and a useful aid for test preparation. Fully trained physicians and other health professionals, too, will be able to use it for a self-taught refresher course in ophthalmology.

The special features of this book include:

- More than 500 clear, well-drawn illustrations and color photographs illustrating clinical findings, disease pathophysiology, and more
- Many new illustrations since the previous edition reflecting the latest developments in the field, particularly in the chapters on the retina and the cornea
- A new appendix containing correlations between clinical findings and the latest examining techniques, as well as a guide to visual field defects
- Comprehensive presentation of examining techniques
- An expanded glossary and a copiously illustrated table of important anatomical structures
- A convenient and comprehensive table of cardinal manifestations of disease with associated findings, probable diagnoses, and suggestions for diagnostic work-up
- Clearly and consistently organized chapters on all major diseases

Just as in the 1st edition, the individual chapters are organized to maximize their usefulness as a teaching tool:

- Each chapter begins with the relevant basic concepts in anatomy and physiology
- All diseases are consistently presented in accordance with clinical logic: first the symptoms, then the examination findings, then the diagnosis
- The diseases are both described in words and shown in didactically useful illustrations

Understand the entire field of ophthalmology with this compact, beautifully illustrated text!
