DB2 Developer's Guide

Publisher: Sams; 5 edition | 2004-05-21 | 1512 Pages | ISBN: 0672326132 | CHM | 12.87 MB

Marketshare for DB2 has been growing steadily over the past 5 years and with the announcement of DB2 Universal Database V8 (T-Rex), the product has never had more momentum. DB2 owns about 30 percent of the database market--the same as Oracle. Not only is the product used in many Fortune 500 companies, but it is becoming very popular in small to medium sized businesses as well. This book provides the reader with a comprehensive reference and research tool for DB2 for the mainframe. Official material is awkwardly written, spans over a dozen manuals in PDF format, and lacks real-world guidance. Author, Craig Mullins, consistently hears from readers of past editions that they rely on this book as their primary reference for DB2. Craig Mullins is constantly being asked when it will support a new release. "This is an excellent book . . . It is chock full of DB2 technical information, design and tuning approaches and database administration guidelines . . .Mullins seems to have dumped his entire DB2 life experience into DB2 Developer's Guide."- Jonathon Sayles in Relational Database Journal.

DB2 9 Fundamentals Certification Study Guide

Roger E. Sanders, "DB2 9 Fundamentals Certification Study Guide"
Publisher: Mc Press | 2007-05-01 | 552 Pages | ISBN: 1583470727 | CHM | 9 MB

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a way of organizing software. If your company's development projects adhere to the principles of SOA, the outcome will be an inventory of modular units called "services", which allow for a quick response to change.

This book tells the SOA story in a simple, straightforward manner that will help you understand not only the buzzwords and benefits, but also the technologies that underlie SOA: XML, WSDL, SOAP, XPath, BPEL, SCA, and SDO. And through it all, the authors provide business examples and illustrations, giving a practical meaning to abstract ideas.

SOA for the Business Developer:

* Gives a detailed overview of Extensible Markup Language (XML), including namespaces and XML schema.

* Describes Web Services Definition Language (WSDL) and SOAP, the standard SOA technologies.

* Gives a clear tutorial on XML Path Language (XPath), a language for deriving data from transmitted messages and other sources. XPath is useful for working with a variety of other technologies, including several described in this book.

* Gives comprehensive details on BPEL 2.0, a language that coordinates services and whose preceding version is already in numerous products. Our coverage is sufficient for most of your work with BPEL and includes a quick-reference guide.

* Introduces Service Component Architecture (SCA), a proposed standard for composing and deploying applications. You're sure to hear more of SCA, which is sponsored by 18 companies.

* Introduces Service Data Objects (SDO), a proposed standard for representing data in a single way, even if the data comes from different types of data sources. SDO is likely to accompany SCA into the limelight.

Jdbc: Java Database Connectivity

Bernard Van Haecke, Jdbc: Java Database Connectivity
John Wiley & Sons | ISBN: 0764531441 | PDF | 1997| 1.38 MB | 385 pages

This valuable guide provides both the academic side--designing databases--and the practical side--coding interfaces--of enterprise applications involving JDBC. Van Haecke goes into much detail on designing database applications, a process he calls identifying the "business logic" of a program. He talks a little bit about three-tier database design (though dbAnywhere and similar programs get glossed over) and discusses CORBA from a conceptual point of view. Van Haecke also covers Remote Method Invocation (RMI) and security in more depth than most books offer; the automotive-flavored sample application included for RMI is hardly typical of the usual dry fare employed to explain the subject. Van Haecke, a Sun Microsystems consultant, shines when he explains complicated database topics. This book includes a great discussion of serving multimedia from a database, including a complete sample application for that purpose. All the source code appears on the companion CD-ROM along with Bongo 1.0, JDK 1.1.1, and some other tools. If you already have a decent grasp of JDBC and want guidance through the hairier aspects of Java database work, this is the book for you.

When Rebels Become Stakeholders: Democracy, Agency and Social Change in India

Prof. Subrata K. Mitra, V. B. Singh, "When Rebels Become Stakeholders: Democracy, Agency and Social Change in India"
Sage Publications Pvt. Ltd 2009 | ISBN-10: 8178299453 | 344 Pages | PDF | 1,1 MB

When Rebels become Stakeholders: Democracy, Agency and Social Change in India, explores the agency of ordinary men and women in the making of democratic social change in India. The study is specific to India, but the issues are of general interest, particularly for the comparative politics of democratic social change.

In contrast to the majority of post-colonial states, India has achieved both democracy and social change. The authors focus on the political skills of India's voters and their leaders, instead of the essence of Indian culture to explain this remarkable phenomenon. The study draws on public opinion data on political information, attitudes, values and participation, derived from three national surveys of the Indian electorate held in 1971, 1996 and 2004, to explain this complex theme. It specifies the two main puzzles-the instrumentality of electoral agency in the making of India's social revolution, and implications of the findings of the study for the theory of democratic social change that underpin the study. The author provides an analysis of the empirical results, a resume of the empirical findings, theoretical implications of those findings for democracy and social change, questionnaires, explanation of the research designs used in the surveys, and the method of data collection.

The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History

John M. Barry , "The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History (Audiobook)"
Penguin Audio | 2006 | ISBN: 0143058827 | Audio CD | mp3 | 203 MB

In 1918, a plague swept across the world virtually without warning, killing healthy young adults as well as vulnerable infants and the elderly. Hospitals and morgues were quickly overwhelmed; in Philadelphia, 4,597 people died in one week alone and bodies piled up on the streets to be carted off to mass graves. But this was not the dreaded Black Death-it was "only influenza." In this sweeping history, Barry (Rising Tide) explores how the deadly confluence of biology (a swiftly mutating flu virus that can pass between animals and humans) and politics (President Wilson's all-out war effort in WWI) created conditions in which the virus thrived, killing more than 50 million worldwide and perhaps as many as 100 million in just a year. Overcrowded military camps and wide-ranging troop deployments allowed the highly contagious flu to spread quickly; transport ships became "floating caskets." Yet the U.S. government refused to shift priorities away from the war and, in effect, ignored the crisis. Shortages of doctors and nurses hurt military and civilian populations alike, and the ineptitude of public health officials exacerbated the death toll. In Philadelphia, the hardest-hit municipality in the U.S., "the entire city government had done nothing" to either contain the disease or assist afflicted families. Instead, official lies and misinformation, Barry argues, created a climate of "fear... [that] threatened to break the society apart." Barry captures the sense of panic and despair that overwhelmed stricken communities and hits hard at those who failed to use their power to protect the public good. He also describes the work of the dedicated researchers who rushed to find the cause of the disease and create vaccines. Flu shots are widely available today because of their heroic efforts, yet we remain vulnerable to a virus that can mutate to a deadly strain without warning. Society's ability to survive another devastating flu pandemic, Barry argues, is as much a political question as a medical one.

VB.NET: A Laboratory Course

Nell B. Dale, Michael McMillan, VB.NET: A Laboratory Course
Jones and Bartlett Publishers | ISBN: 0763718238 | 2002 | PDF | 269 pages | 7.8 MB

VB.NET: A Laboratory Course teaches the reader how to program in Visual Basic from an object-oriented viewpoint, which is important becuase of the object-oriented flavor of VB.NET. The emphasis of this book is not on the fancy users interface tricks you can perform with VB.NET, but on the fundamentals of writing correct and efficient VB programs. The book provides a number of example programs that illustrate the concepts developed in the text, and the exercises at the end of each chapter help to reinforce the expository material from the chapter. Visual Basic is arguably the most popular computer programming language for application development in the United States and around the world today. Visual Basic is also an excellent language to teach as a "first" computer language because of its easy-to-learn syntax and flexibility. This book treats Visual Basic as a serious programming language and not as just another Windows application. One concern that is frequently voiced when discussing the differences between Visual Basic and C+++ is the level of object- oriented programming supported by Visual Basic. With the upcoming release of VB.net, the language will support all the major features of object- oriented programming- encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism.
